It was started in 1965 by Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Goldie Hedrick ( a sorority member) saw the need to help cancer patients in Jay County.
The 1st JCCS Board includes sorority members: Goldie Hedrick, Fran Gross, Edith Green, Betty Stone, Joyce Tipton, Barbara Gaskill and a Doctor from Ball Memorial Hospital.
Flossie McMullen from Bryant had been assisted financially by the Jay County Cancer Society. Having no close relatives, she left her entire estate to the Cancer Society after her death. This is what gave much financial assistance in the early years. The early years were much different from today as far as services offered by JCCS. Before, they were the ones to place Hospital beds, supply walkers, commodes, and wound dressing. Today, the local Hospices offer the service of equipment in the homes. Today the Jay County Cancer society helps our friends and neighbors in the form of cash to pay for uninsured cancer related expenses.
This includes prosthetics, medication, wigs, Mileage to help with gas to and from the doctor's appointments and treatments. The difference in the Jay County Cancer Society (helps financially to Jay County residents) and the American Cancer Society (raises money for research, to provide publication, to pay for offices and salaries. There is a definitely a need for both cancer societies.
It is all in how you wish your donations to be spent Donations may also be made to Portland Foundation in care of Jay County Cancer Society. To donate click here.
